The following techniques can help you to increase your willpower
- Test it
First of all, taste how strong your willpower is. Try to keep doing something even when you don’t want to do it anymore. Try to stop doing something that you enjoy doing. Are able to do it? When you test your willpower, you’ll be able to know where you stand.
- Practice it everyday
Do something that you don’t like.
Practice use of willpower every day. When you practice it regularly, it will increase. Without practice, you won’t have any willpower. Initially, it may be little difficult to practice the use of willpower. Start slow and small. And gradually start building on that.
Let’s take an example
You like sweets but at the same time you’re trying to lose weight. Tell yourself whenever you see sweets-“I will not eat this sweet for the next 10 minutes.” And try to use your willpower to NOT to eat the sweet for the next 10 minutes. Once you complete the 10 minutes, probably you’ll be away from the sweet plate. If not, you can again apply the same method and stop yourself from eating the sweets in front of you. It is difficult but, you can do it if you want to.
- Meditate for 10 minutes
Researchers found that meditation can increase willpower. They found that after three hours of meditation subjects showed increase in self-control and ability to focus. Eleven hours of meditation showed visible changes in the brain. Meditation has the capacity to increase the flow of blood to the prefrontal cortex. Meditation also improves neural connections in the brain, especially in the areas which are responsible for self-control.
- Exercise and martial arts
Exercise of any type will help you to increase your will power. Going to a gym and lifting weights will definitely help you. If you learn karate, taekwondo or any other martial art, that will also help you to increase your willpower. Why? It’s because in all types of martial arts, you will need to perform exercises, and practice fighting with other people, which are difficult and needs lots of willpower to complete. That will be like an exercise of willpower for you and when you exercise your willpower, it will gradually increase. Besides, the confidence and self-belief that it will offer you will also help you to continue working on something even though you don’t feel like working any more.
I got myself into karate. To make myself (both body and my mind) stronger. Did it help? Tremendously. It not only increased my self-confidence and belief in myself but it also increased my willpower.
