Bikash Kalita : Your Life, Your Choice

How did you spend today?

How did you spend today? How do you spend your days- by chasing mice or hunting antelope?

Newton Gingrich is a writer, politician and historian, who talked about our life in an attractive reasoning. This is something which is applicable to our lives at any point of time, at any condition.

“A lion is fully capable of capturing, killing, and eating a field mouse. But it turns out that the energy required to do so exceeds the caloric content of the mouse itself. So a lion that spent its day hunting and eating field mice would slowly starve to death. A lion can’t live on field mice. A lion needs antelope. Antelope are big animals. They take more speed and strength to capture and kill, and once killed, they provide a feast for the lion and her pride. So ask yourself at the end of the day, ‘Did I spend today chasing mice or hunting antelope?’”

So, at the end of the day ask yourself, “How did I spend a day-changing mice or hunting antelopes?” What will be your answer?

Your antelope can be your work, carrier, business, social work, economic condition for anything else. Calorie here means meaningful progress, money, success or something else. If you want to do something big, whatever you will do every day for that will be your antelope. When you work towards the goal, the results are likely to be big and more satisfying.

Sometimes you may not want to do something big but one to do something which is influential. That is your antelope. If you find satisfaction, or job satisfaction and you feel that we have done something in life by doing this work, then it’s your antelope.

Those things which look attractive, are within your capacity but not parts of your goals, those are your mice. They do not contribute anything to what you want to do in your life. They may be big tasks or may be small tasks but they are not what you want and they do not help you to move forward towards your goals, they do not give you any satisfaction. There may be many benefits of such works but these are not what you want.

The day has ended, now what?

The day is gone and if now you take stock of the day, this is a very good habits. Simply understand that your habits will take a major role in deciding what your life will be. How did you spend today- when you make a habit of taking stock of that every day, then you will be able to catch antelopes or at least you’ll be ready to try it every day and then, you’ll be able to do it.

How can you catch an antelope?

To catch an antelope first you will need to know what your antelope is. Isn’t it so? What is an antelope to you may not be won for someone else. Once you decide what your antelope is, you’ll need to learn how to catch it. The mother lions teach that to the young cubs. After learning that they need to practice. And after continuously practising it for some time a young, new learner lion learns to hunt antelopes. You will also need to practice catching your antelopes and you’ll have to keep doing it for some time. If you do that continuously, after some practice, you will also learn to catch your antelopes.

If you want to catch antelopes, you will need to focus on how you perform your daily tasks.

How to complete your daily tasks better

If you’re not using a to do list to complete the things you need to do in your daily life, you’re losing something big. Probably you could have done much more and much bigger by simply following that list for your daily life. So, first they need to make a habit of create that to do list and then follow it to complete things you need to do. If you are already doing it I can go to the next level by asking yourself, “will the things I have completed today help me to move in the direction of completing what I want to complete or I’m simply focusing on doing more things?”

You can improve your list by arranging a based on priority. You can do that yourself, you can use Eisenhower metrics or you can use any other tool that will help you to prioritise your tasks for today so that we can move in the direction of what you want to achieve for yourself.

We waste our energy and time

Even when you are chasing mice, you will need to use your energy and time. But when you are chasing mice, you’re wasting your energy and time both, because you will not get the results and the satisfaction that you want by chasing mice. Why? Because he wanted antelopes, not mice. And even if you kill lots of mice, it will not fulfil your demand. It may be okay for a few days but after some time the lion chasing mice will die from hunger and starvation.

How do I use it?

I’m a motivational speaker and I also provide counselling services to people who need it. However, I do not go to each and every organisation and programs I’m invited to. I charge a high professional fees which is higher in the area I am in, but I also offer the right value for it. There are organisations who cannot afford my fees. This saves me from time wasting people and programs, and I can use that time to do something more productive and useful for people who follow me. Again there are some programs which are nothing but waste of energy and time. They do not add value to the attendees because of the environment and the way it is managed, and they do not do justice to my efforts and time. Time is the most important possession I have and so I need to use it wisely. By finding out what is mice and what is antelope for me and people listening to me, I can not only provide the maximum benefit to the attendees, but can also get the maximum value of my time and energy.

Mediocre results

When we focus on catching mice inside of hunting antelopes, the results that we will get will be mediocre. We’ll need to work hard and it will take time but the results will be mediocre. If you practice chasing mice every day, your will always get mediocre results. You’ll definitely get results because you’re working hard and spending time but that result will not give you satisfaction. You will not want to associate your name with such results. You have worked hard throughout your life and the results associated with your name are of mediocre levels. That may be good enough for a general person but would you be happy and satisfied with it? Or you would rather love to associate your name with works that are less in number but of very high quality which no one else can do?

Catching mice is less hard

Hunting an antelope is harder than catching a mice. And again when you are catching mice, you are at least doing something, doing some more. Generally we do not like hard work, we do not want to get out of our comfort zones. So, we like to do things which are easier for us. However, getting out of your comfort zone sometimes is good for you. Even if you can’t do it each and every day, if you just do it sometimes, it will definitely help you to improve yourself in different aspects. As a lion, your happiness and satisfaction will come from hunting and antelope, not catching mice.

Let’s dream and work bigger

Let’s do something which will make you feel as if you have done something in your life, which will make you proud of yourself, which will answer the question “why have I come to this world.” Let’s do something which will not only help me to do great and feel satisfaction and happiness, but will also help other people and improve their lives. Let’s do something big as per our own capabilities today. When my capabilities increase tomorrow, I can do something bigger, I can modify my goals, I can do more things that I want to do. Dreaming small is the fault. Let’s dream big. If we take a short at the moon, we may reach some stars.

At the end of today, do not forget to ask yourself, “How did I spend the day-chasing mice or catching antelopes?”

What will your answer?
